In 1969, only 390 Corvettes were built with the legendary L89 427 cubic inch engine. The L89 engine option was based on the 435hp L71 but, instead uses high flowing aluminum cylinder heads, solid lifter cam, and triple 2-barrel Holley carburetors. These changes lead to an extraordinary increase in power over the L71 engine. The car was purchased new by Steve Honnell, an executive with Ford Motor Company out of Atlanta,GA. Steve Honnell was also a Ford sponsored drag racer and is well known for his 1964 Thunderbolt, 1967 427 Comet, 1970 Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II, and 1970 Ford Torino King Cobra. Although Steve had ties with Ford, he had a love affair with the Chevrolet Corvette. In 1968, Steve was in Atlanta and test drove a friend’s 1967 Corvette L71 and fell in love. Steve had to have one and was referred to Hood Motor Company in Fort Walton, Florida to order his very special 1969 Corvette L89 Convertible. He waited almost a year to get his very special aluminum head L89. During his ownership of the car, he never drove it because at the time he owned 17 Corvettes plus all of his other Fords. Steve would retain ownership of his special Corvette all the way until 2005, when it would be passed on to its next caretaker. The option list for this factory 1969 Chevrolet Corvette L89 convertible include Power Brakes, Power Steering, Posi-traction with 3.55 gear ratio, Full-Transistor Ignition System, 4-speed close ratio transmission, Auxiliary Hardtop, Vinyl Cover (Black), Daytona Yellow Paint, AM/FM radio and most importantly the L89 engine option. This car has achieved the highly coveted NCRS Top Flight Award in April 2014. It has also been registered and listed in Kevin Cavanaugh’s L89 registry. It is powered by its number matching L89 427/435hp aluminum head engine and numbers matching M21 4 speed transmission. The long list of paperwork and original documents is extremely impressive , but some of which includes; retail order sheet and dealer internal order sheet, car invoice, letter from John De Lorean to Mr Honnell, Florida temporary tag application, Corvette order copy #7, car shipper invoice, Window sticker, Suggested schedule price sheet, protecto plate, tank sticker, Corvette owners card, original selling dealer’s owner's manual envelope, plus much more. This 1969 Corvette L89 Convertible is a truly special find. Its extreme rarity, mixed with its ultra low 358 documented miles, never being tiled and still remaining on its factory MSO. Most certainly this must be in the top percentile of most desirable and collectible 1969 Corvettes in existence. This is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity to be the first registered owner of a 1969 Chevrolet Corvette L89.
