Traditional Decision-Making in Evaluation: FGD with Ogiek Council of Elders

The was a Focus Group Discussion with members of the Ogiek Council of Elders and residents of Mariashoni, representing various clans and sublocations within the community. Born between 1956 and 2000, they bring diverse experiences as elders, businessmen, and youth from the Ogiek community. Their discussions centre on traditional decision-making processes, the importance of elders in resolving disputes and preserving cultural values through storytelling, and the challenges they face with current development projects. They highlight issues such as the lack of Ogiek involvement in project planning and implementation, environmental concerns, land disputes, inadequate representation in government, and the need for employment opportunities for local youth. They emphasise the crucial role of the Council of Elders in community leadership and advocate for their greater involvement in selecting representatives and guiding development initiatives to ensure the community benefits equitably.
