Inside Bangladesh’s Garment Market That Clothes the World

Bangladesh is home to the world’s second-largest garment industry, a sector employing an estimated four to five million people and generating around 80–85% of the country’s export earnings. It’s an industry worth tens of billions of dollars each year, yet behind the headlines of rapid growth lies a more complex story — one shaped by low wages, long hours and widespread labour concerns. In this video, I visit Dhaka’s New Market, the city’s largest clothing hub, to see how the garment sector looks at street level. Here, factory overruns, surplus stock and cancelled international orders end up in the hands of local traders. Many of the world’s most recognisable brands pass through these stalls in one form or another, revealing how closely global fashion supply chains are tied to everyday life in Bangladesh.
