At the beginning of this post, today's "Deformed" doesn't have a title. We'll see… Isabel brings us today a book by the great Bell Hooks about teaching: 'Teaching to Transgress: Education as the Practice of Freedom.' In it, Hooks offers a comprehensive critique of the pedagogical system in general and the university in particular. Teaching is one-way, teacher-student, and issues like gender, race, or class simply don't exist. Now that I'm writing this, I might think that nothing has changed… well, let's continue. Bell Hooks implemented "revolutionary" measures, previously unknown in academia, such as requiring participation from anyone who wanted to attend her classes. Lucía brings us another book that, listen up, she could have written herself, because it's of such great interest to her: ‘Victorian Murderesses’ by Mary S. Hartman, a book that's not only true crime, but also a social history of 19th-century French and English women who, get this, were accused of murder. But it's not just true crime, as we said, it's a thoughtful book that goes deeper and tells us a lot about the whys, the whens, and the profound context surrounding a crime, something not so common.
