Sgt. Major Sam Woodhead from The U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own” performs and breaks down the trombone excerpt from Joyce’s 71st NY Regiment March by Thornton Boyer, arranged by Mayhew Lake, a frequently requested audition excerpt in military band settings. SGM Sam Woodhead is the solo and principal trombonist and trombone section leader of The U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own” Concert Band, a position he has held since 2004, and is also a member of the Concert Brass. Before winning his role in the Concert Band, Woodhead served as a trombonist in the Ceremonial Band of “Pershing’s Own.” In addition to his primary duties, he has performed with the Brass Quintet, Blues, Orchestra, Chorus, Herald Trumpets, and DownRange, touring Kuwait, Iraq, and Afghanistan as part of the Sergeant Major of the Army’s Hope and Freedom Tour in 2006. Woodhead is chairman of the Eastern Trombone Workshop, founder and director of the Washington Trombone Ensemble, and serves on the Board of Advisors for the International Trombone Association. A highly sought-after freelance musician in the Washington, D.C. area, he has performed with organizations such as the National Symphony Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Washington Symphonic Brass, and numerous productions at Signature Theatre. He has appeared as a soloist with “Pershing’s Own” on the band’s 2005 California Tour and at concerts on the steps of the U.S. Capitol. Woodhead has presented masterclasses and solo performances at Boston University’s Tanglewood Institute, Bowling Green University, Brown University, and Yale University. His primary teachers include John Swallow, Milton Stevens, and Mark Manduca, with additional studies under Matthew Guilford, Craig Mulcahy, and David Taylor.
