Perhaps also because they are extremely similar to us in their social behavior and nature. Dolphins live in networks, learn from each other, and use tools. Equally surprising: The most important insights into dolphins very often have a Swiss background. For 40 years, the University of Zurich has been making international headlines with its dolphin research in Shark Bay, Western Australia. "Einstein" accompanied the team on their adventurous work at sea. As fascinating and popular as dolphins are, these fantastic marine mammals are endangered worldwide. Pollution, industrial fishing, and climate change are just three of many reasons. In the Red Sea off Egypt, mass tourism is also taking its toll on the dolphins. Swiss biologist Angela Ziltener has been working on-site for many years to protect the habitat of these magnificent animals. It's often a Sisyphean task for what is probably the only researcher who can study wild dolphins up close on her daily dives through the coral reefs.
