Stop Raising Layer Hens — These 4 Birds Lay More Eggs and Feed Themselves

Most folks start their egg flock with layer hens, because that's what everyone before them did. But the standard hen quits when the days get short and runs almost entirely on bought grain. After forty years working my own ground, I've raised four birds that lay as well or better — and forage a far bigger share of their own feed right off your land. Here are the four, with the eggs, the foraging share, and the honest catch on each. In this video: 🦆 Khaki Campbell ducks — the egg champion, roughly 250–340 eggs a year, relentless slug-and-bug foragers that keep laying through winter 🦆 Welsh Harlequin ducks — calmer dual-purpose layers, ~240–330 eggs, excellent foragers, and good mothers that hatch their own 🐦 Guinea fowl — seasonal but heavy spring/summer layers that forage close to all their own food and clear your ticks for free 🥚 Coturnix quail — the most eggs per pound of feed and per square foot of any bird, laying at about six weeks I'll be straight about the trade-offs too: ducks need clean water and a dry bed, Campbells can be flighty and loud, guineas are loud and roam wide, and quail aren't free-rangers and need a safe covered pen. Ezra Stutzman is a composite educational character representing a lifelong small-farm tradition. Content is general farming experience for education — not professional, financial, or veterinary advice. Animals, climates, and soils differ — always check with your local extension office or veterinarian before making changes on your own place. My name is Ezra Stutzman, and I've spent more than forty years working my own ground the Plain way, the way my father and his father taught me, with my hands, my patience, and whatever the land is willing to give back. I started this channel because so much of today's farming advice has forgotten the old, simple, proven methods that fed families for generations, without a single bag of store-bought feed or a fancy machine. I'm not a doctor, a professor, or a salesman. I'm just a farmer who believes good knowledge ought to be shared freely, plainly, and honestly. My mission is simple. I want to help everyday folks raise healthier animals, grow more from less, and bring a little more self-sufficiency back to their own backyards, one honest, time-tested method at a time. If something here helps your homestead, then I've done my job.
