According to Islamic narrations, Allah commanded Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to leave his wife Hajar (Hagar) and their infant son Prophet Ismail (Ishmael) in a barren desert valley. At that time, the area that is now known as Makkah was completely deserted, with no water, vegetation, or human settlement. When their limited supply of water ran out, Hajar ran desperately between the hills of Safa and Marwah in search of help. In response to her faith and struggle, Allah caused the miraculous well of Zamzam to spring forth from beneath the feet of Prophet Ismail. The presence of water attracted the Jurhum tribe, who later settled in the valley, marking the beginning of a permanent community. Years later, Prophet Ibrahim and Prophet Ismail rebuilt the Kaaba, which is now known as Kaaba. Over time, due to its religious importance and trade routes, Makkah developed into a thriving and sacred city for Muslims around the world. 2... The first tribe to settle in Makkah was the tribe of Banu Jurhum, also known simply as Jurhum. According to Islamic historical sources, after the miraculous well of Zamzam sprang forth near the infant Prophet Ismail, the once barren valley began to show signs of life. Passing travelers noticed birds circling above the area, which indicated the presence of water in the desert. This attracted members of Banu Jurhum, who were originally from Yemen and were traveling through the region. When they discovered the well of Zamzam, they sought permission from Ismail’s mother, Hajar, to settle near the water source. She agreed, on the condition that the ownership of the well would remain with her and her son. Over time, Banu Jurhum established homes and formed the first organized community in Makkah. Prophet Ismail grew up among them, learned their Arabic language, and later married into the tribe. The settlement of Banu Jurhum marked the true beginning of Makkah as a populated city.
