Horseshoe Sandwich (Springfield, IL) on Sandwiches of History⁣

Yes, the day has finally come for me to tackle the regional giant know as the Horseshoe. Purportedly invented in 1928 but chef Joe Schweska at a Leland Hotel in Springfield, Illinois. The name derives from a massive slab of ham that, when cut from the bone resembles a horseshoe. Then french fries were placed on top to “represent” the horseshoe nails. Not sure metaphor the cheese sauce was there for but probably best we just move on. Nowadays, a lot of recipes use hamburger patties in lieu of ham. Some add bacon and tomato a la the Kentucky Hot Brown. I didn’t. I stuck with what I think was the original recipe and sauce recipe.
