Sergei Rachmaniov (1873-1943) is said to have first encountered and been deeply impressed by the famous painting "The Isle of the Dead" by the Swiss painter Arnold Böcklin (1827-1901) during his stay in Paris in 1907. The painting, of which the artist produced five versions between 1880 and 1886, enjoyed great popularity at the fin de siecle and far beyond. Originally created as a commissioned work for a young widow, "The Isle of the Dead" with its dark, morbid aura is often understood as a symbolist expression of the decline of "old" European culture on the threshold of the modern technological age. Böcklins impressive piece of art became the subject of numerous works of art in the fields of music, painting, literature and film. Rachmaninov composed his symphonic poem during a stay in Dresden in 1909 and conducted the premiere in Moscow just two weeks after the work was completed in April 1909. L’œuvre, dont cinq versions voient le jour entre 1880 et 1886, a toujours fasciné public et artistes. Elle inspire de nombreux échos en musique, en peinture, en littérature et au cinéma. On a souvent vu dans l’aspect sombre et morbide de la toile – commandée par une jeune veuve –, l’avatar symboliste d’une culture européenne vieillie et déclinante, à l’aube d’une ère moderne vouée à la technique. Composé lors d'un séjour à Dresde, le poème symphonique de Rachmaninov est créé à Moscou deux semaines après son achèvement, en avril 1909, sous la direction du musicien. Böcklins beeindruckendes Kunstwerk wurde zum Thema zahlreicher anderer Werke in Musik, Malerei, Literatur und Film. Rachmaninov komponierte seine Sinfonische Dichtung während eines Aufenthaltes in Dresden 1909. Er selbst dirigierte die Uraufführung in Moskau nur zwei Wochen nach Fertigstellung des Werkes im April 1909.
