Nagaland: Thousands join candlelight vigil to demand justice for slain athlete

Thousands of people gathered at PHQ Junction in Kohima on Friday evening to take part in a candle-light vigil, protesting the alleged murder of 22-year-old Vihozhonu Zao. During the vigil, several organisations and community leaders condemned the incident and expressed grief while demanding swift justice. Participating organisations included the Jakhama Women Society, Naga Students' Federation, Angami Women Organisation, Angami Students' Union and the Southern Angami Youth Organisation among several others. Multiple tribal bodies, student organisations and civil-society groups across Nagaland have strongly condemned the alleged murder and pledged to continue their campaign for justice. Zao was found dead on the morning of October 25 under mysterious circumstances at Old Ministers’ Hill Colony in Kohima. Residents raised an alarm after spotting a body near a ring well. The body, later identified as Zao’s, was reportedly covered with firewood and a sack and bore visible injuries. She was a promising athlete, who had represented Nagaland at the U-23 National Basketball Championship.
