Mahabad, formerly known as Savuchbulak (Persian: مهاباد, Kurdish: مه‌هاباد, Mehabad), is a city in West Azerbaijan Province, Iran. It is located in a valley south of Lake Urmia. Its population is 197,441. Its name means "moon city." The inhabitants speak the Sorani dialect of Kurdish and are mostly Sunni Shafi'i Muslims. Mahabad is an important city for Iranian Kurds. The Republic of Mahabad (Kurdish: كوماری مهاباد Komarî Mehabad, Persian: جمهوری مهاباد Jomhuriye Mahâbâd) was an unrecognized Kurdish state established in January 1946 with the support of the Soviet Union and dissolved within the same year following the Soviet withdrawal.
