Reducing Bud Load & Resetting Structure
On this vine, we have poor vigour coming off the right side; I have decided to leave just the inverse spur position on the right and reduce the bud load. On the left side, there is a renewal spur that was left coming out into the midrow. We will remove this as it will not work for the branching system and will most likely be knocked off by a tractor or wire. I have then reset the structure on the left side by taking a spur from last year's fruiting cane and have chased a cane to wrap down. The bud load has been reduced by half from what the previous year was with the intention that the following year we will have better vigour and structure to continue the branching process.
