Tulipe means "water that flows down from the mounds." The Tulipe Site Museum and Ceremonial Center is a subtropical sanctuary where the ancient inhabitants of the area expressed their knowledge of astronomy, geometry, and architecture in monumental structures to honor their gods with purification rites. The recovered sunken structures are located at 1450 meters above sea level and 70 km from Quito. They belong to the second occupation, that of the Yumbo people, whose archaeological remains speak of a highly organized society. Alongside this complex, mounds, culuncos (ancient burial mounds), petroglyphs, and cemeteries remain scattered throughout the territory of the present-day parishes of Nanegalito, Gualea, and Pacto.
