American transports positioned themselves to land thousands of marines, but upon reaching land, they encountered almost no resistance. The arrival of the American forces had completely surprised the Japanese, and the few units present ended up retreating. For months, the U.S. Navy's Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral Ernest King, had wanted to launch an offensive in the South Pacific. With the monumental American victory at Midway, the threat from the Imperial Japanese Navy in the Central Pacific was virtually eliminated. In light of this, on June 24, 1942, King ordered the Commander-in-Chief of the Pacific Ocean Areas, Admiral Chester Nimitz, to plan the capture of Tulagi in the Solomon Islands. However, the priority soon shifted when American radio intelligence indicated that the Japanese were building an airfield on Guadalcanal, jeopardizing Allied supply lines to Australia.
