Bari, Matera & the Adriatic Coast Unfiltered

We thought we knew what to expect from southern Italy. We had seen the postcards. We had even been to Bari once before — three hours off a cruise ship, clock already running, barely enough time to walk through the old town before sailing away. This time was different. This is our full exploration of Puglia, using Bari as our base — and what we found reached well beyond anything we anticipated. We start in the ancient lanes of Bari Vecchia, where limestone streets barely wide enough for two people have stood for a thousand years. We visit the Basilica di San Nicola — and discover a connection none of our viewers from Bulgaria, Greece, or Russia will expect. St. Nicholas is the patron saint of our own hometown, Burgas, and standing in front of his basilica in southern Italy, reading a Cyrillic inscription carved into stone, was one of those moments travel rarely gives you twice. From Bari, we take the train down the coast to Polignano a Mare — that famous little cove you've almost certainly seen in a photograph without knowing where it is — and then on to Monopoli, a working fishing port that rewards exactly the kind of slow, unscheduled afternoon we love most. On our last day, we head inland to Altamura, home to what may be the oldest continuously operating bakery in the world. The same oven. Nine hundred years. Two women running it — one over 100 years old, the other in her late 90s — both still working, both fully themselves. The focaccia alone is worth the detour. And then Matera. Nothing prepares you for Matera. A city carved into a ravine, inhabited continuously for an estimated 9,000 years, once condemned by the Italian government as a national disgrace, and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most visually extraordinary places we have ever stood. You may recognize it from The Passion of the Christ or the opening sequence of the James Bond film No Time to Die. In person, it is something else entirely. We flew Sofia to Bari for 33 euros one way. Round trip for two, with luggage, was about $400. From our home in Burgas, Bulgaria, Europe feels like a neighbor. That is still something we are grateful for every single time. Next video: Lecce, and the south of Puglia. Don't miss it. 📍 Destinations covered: Bari | Polignano a Mare | Monopoli | Altamura | Matera ✈️ Route: Burgas → Sofia → Bari (approx. $400 round trip for two) 🚂 Train: Bari → Polignano a Mare (€6.20, 30 min) | Bari → Altamura (regional rail) 🌍 We're Zarko and Tressa — a retired couple based in Burgas, Bulgaria, exploring the world with curiosity, without rushing.
