The history of the Patriarchal Cathedral Basilica of Saint Mark, commonly known as St Mark's Basilica or Basilica di San Marco starts in 828 AD. According to the famous legend two Venetian merchants named Buono and Rustico travelled to Alexandria and smuggled the relics of Saint Mark the Evangelist out of the city by hiding them inside a basket covered with layers of salt pork and cabbage. The doge built a chapel next to the palace to secure holy relics, using them as a powerful symbol of Venice. The original St. Mark’s Basilica was destroyed by a major fire in 976 during a political uprising. The present-day structure was largely built in the late 11th century. Famous for its breathtaking gold mosaics, five sweeping domes, and magnificent Italo-Byzantine architecture, this legendary landmark was historically celebrated as the Chiesa d'Oro - Church of Gold.
