A Visit to the German-Russian Border of 1914...in Central Poland
A tale of two stations, Nowe Skalmierzyce and Kalisz. From 1815 to 1914, so from the end of Napoleon and the Congress of Vienna to the outbreak of World War I, the extensive border between the Prussia and Russia ran through much of Central Poland. Neu Skalmierschütz (today Nowe Skalmierzyce) was the German border town and just a few kilometres further east was Kalisz, one of the westernmost points in so-called Congress Poland, the Russian-occupied part of partioned Poland. Indeed from the Third Partition of Poland in 1795 to the end of World War I in 1918, Poland did not exist as an independent nation state and was carved up by its larger neighbors Prussia, Russia and Austria. From 1871 onwards, Prussia was part of the newly forged German Empire. Railway construction was slow and cumbersome in Russian-controlled Poland, unlike in the Austrian and German regions of today's Polska. The broad gauge main line from Warsaw to Kalisz did not open until 1902 and a dual gauge continuation from Kalisz to Neu Skalmierschütz only opened in 1906, giving a strategic link across the Russian-German border. Marking its significance and representative function, Neu Skalmierschütz received a magnificent Neo-Gothic railway station in a typical Prussian style with ornate brick architecture, nearby colossal water tower and a quaint colony of flats for railway employees and postal workers. The road border crossing with guard huts and wooden barriers was about a kilometer from the station premises, down the main street. There smugglers would frequently try to circumvent the guards to bring highly desired German goods to the undersupplied Russian lands. As the Russian-occupied frontier town, Kalisz had a local military garrison and cossacks for border patrol. Right on the border and opposite of Neu Skalmierschütz was a large white Russian customs house and also brick-built barracks at Kalisz Szczypiorno. After the outbreak of World War I, the Russian army could not hold these exposed positions and soon had to abandon Kalisz and other border regions as well. In August 1914, the Russian gauge Kalisz station was largely destroyed as were other parts of the city, in scenes that drew comparisons to Louvain/Leuven Belgium in the fateful summer of that year. The current facade, as the station features in this film, took shape during renovations in the 1950s. In 1918, Kalisz became part of the re-established independent Polish nation state and about three fourths of the historic city center had to be rebuilt in the 1920s, due to the damage incurred in World War I. In this film the historic border park 'Skwer historyczny przy granicy' can be seen, with its two reconstructed border huts, frontier marking and attractive as well as educational photo displays. This was developed by the town (Gmina) of Nowe Skalmierzyce in 2015, almost a 100 years after the old Russian-German border had ceased to exist there. Dawniej zaniedbany fragment miasta zlokalizowany tuż przy wjeździe do Kalisza i w sąsiedztwie osiedli wielorodzinnych dzięki prowadzonej inwestycji zamieniono w atrakcję turystyczną.
