Director and Narrator: Naomi Kawase Music: Hashiken --------------------------------- One of Japan's leading Kannon sacred sites, adorned with seasonal flowers. Hasedera Temple, located midway up Mt. Hatsuse, is the eighth temple of the 33 Kannon Pilgrimage in the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage and has long attracted many faithful. Its principal image, the Eleven-Headed Kannon Bodhisattva (Important Cultural Property), is said to have been carved by the monk Tokudo during the Nara period from camphor wood, a sacred tree known for its miraculous powers, in order to save people. In his right hand, he holds a shakujo (a staff), a symbol of Jizo Bodhisattva's possession. This symbolizes the Kannon's dual roles as both the Eleven-Headed Kannon, who bestows worldly benefits, and the Jizo Bodhisattva, who rescues those in distress. Due to its unique form, the statue has been called the "Hasedera-style Eleven-Headed Kannon Bodhisattva." Also known as the "Temple of Flowers," this beautiful mountain temple is home to young monks undergoing rigorous training every day. Perhaps their pure and upright hearts have passed on the important things we must never forget: "I want to convey people's prayers" and "I want to help people in their times of need."
