Understanding the Trinity Part 1

Recorded in Reading 2016 “The Christian alone, of all the religions in the world, can boast of a God above us, beside us and within us. Now that is the most important fact of the Trinity.” In Part 1 David Pawson argues that the “doctrine of the Trinity is under more attack today than perhaps it has ever been”. To defend it Christians need to have a firm grasp of their faith, which includes a sound understanding of the Trinity. Addressing the criticism that the actual term “Trinity” does not appear in the Bible, David discusses how the doctrine of the Trinity “grew out of the Bible as we have it” and is found in the Old Testament, which itself points to the New Testament. In Part 2 David provides an overview of early church history, stating that “the gospel depends on Jesus being both fully human and fully divine”. He explores the doctrine of the Trinity as defined in the Creeds of the early church, which were written to defend the faith from contemporary heresies. He takes us from the Apostles’ Creed, which counters Docetism by affirming the belief in the humanity of Jesus as well as his divinity, to the Nicene Creed which defended the church’s belief in Jesus’ full divinity (“conceived by the Holy Ghost”), then from the Athanasian Creed, which addressed the false teaching that there are three Gods (“They are not the same Person but they are the same God”), to the Chalcedonian Creed, which addresses the divinity and humanity of Christ. Finally, David warns modern Evangelicals about the danger of “Binitarian” thinking and exhorts them to worship one God in three Persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
