The Origins of Water Buffalo Were Never What We Thought — Ancient DNA Finally Revealed The Truth

Every water buffalo on Earth belongs to one species. That single fact hid two completely separate origins for ten thousand years. For most of the twentieth century, water buffalo were treated as one long story — one wild ancestor, one domestication event in the Indian subcontinent, one slow spread across Asia and beyond. A chromosome count buried in the scientific literature since the 1960s quietly said otherwise: river buffalo carry fifty chromosomes, swamp buffalo carry only forty-eight. In 2008, ancient DNA from bones in northern China's Wei River valley turned out to belong to an entirely different, now-extinct wild species. And in 2020, genome-wide data finally confirmed what that chromosome gap had been hinting at for sixty years. River buffalo were domesticated in the western Indian subcontinent around 6,300 years ago. Swamp buffalo were domesticated independently, on the border of China and Indochina, thousands of kilometers away, from a wild population that had already been diverging in the wild for nearly a million years. Two groups of farmers, two continents, unaware the other existed — solving the exact same problem and building, essentially, two different animals under one name.
