Single-shot loading (case loading). A cartridge can be an artillery round or a cartridge in which the projectile (bullet, buckshot, or shot), propellant powder, igniting element (primer), and, sometimes, additional elements are combined into a single unit by a case. The term "unitary cartridge" originated in the 19th century—earlier cartridges did not include a separately loaded primer. Modern breech-loading small arms exclusively use unitary cartridges. The 5.45×39mm is a low-impulse Soviet intermediate centerfire cartridge. Developed in the early 1970s, it was adopted in 1974. When designing the 5.45×39mm cartridge, developers took into account the experience of creating and using the American 5.56×45mm cartridge in combat. Therefore, the new cartridge is comparable in effectiveness, despite its lower power. A small-caliber bullet with a high muzzle velocity provides a flat trajectory, offers good penetration, and delivers significant stopping power. The low recoil momentum at the moment of firing improves accuracy and precision, while the reduced cartridge weight allows the shooter to carry more ammunition (200 rounds of 7.62x39mm ammunition weigh the same as 300 rounds of 5.45x39mm ammunition). The AK-74 is a 5.45mm assault rifle developed in 1970 by Soviet designer M. T. Kalashnikov and adopted by the USSR Armed Forces in 1974. It is a further development of the AKM. The AK-74's development was driven by the transition to the new low-impulse 5.45x39mm cartridge. It was first used in the Afghan War and subsequently in all conflicts in the post-Soviet space. Currently, this assault rifle is used in most countries in Eastern Europe, as well as Asia.
