🇬🇧 Bardonecchia is the westernmost municipality in Italy. It's not a trivia quiz, it's a detail that changes the way you look at this place: a Piedmontese Alpine valley literally located at the very end of the peninsula, where Italy ends and France begins, a few kilometers from the Fréjus border. The journey begins in the late afternoon from Milan Lampugnano, aboard an Itabus bound for Turin, where I spend the night before leaving the next morning. The real surprise comes with the SFM regional train: a journey up the Susa Valley, crossing the Piedmont Alps, with views you wouldn't expect from a regional train—mountains, forests, and tunnels alternating until reaching the high altitude of Bardonecchia. Once you arrive, the first thing you notice is that Bardonecchia has two very different souls. There's the modern, popular, and well-known ski resort, and then there's the old town, with its churches, the Tur d'Amun, and stone alleys that tell a much older story. The initial goal was to reach the French border, but the distance and logistics made that too complicated. However, the detour to Melezet proved to be the right choice: a timeless, quiet, almost deserted ancient village that alone is worth the trip.
