An unexpected visit from the Jugendamt and the most difficult decision of the year: take a substantial severance payment from work or not risk my German passport? In this video, I candidly share our experience with the Youth Welfare Office (Jugendamt). We discuss the entire process in detail: how the meeting itself went, what questions we were asked, what actions we took immediately afterward, and what we are still working on. But that's just the beginning. The second part of the video is dedicated to my career decision, which has been dragging on since 2025. At work, I was offered a voluntary severance payment with very generous financial compensation. The temptation was strong, and I found myself faced with a difficult dilemma: take the substantial sum here and now or give it up so as not to jeopardize my naturalization process? The most stressful part of this story is the timing. The window for me to accept the offer with a severance package closed on April 30th, the exact moment our citizenship (Einbürgerung) was being decided. I explain what I ultimately decided, what happened that day, and whether I regret my choice at the end of the video.
