Parish: St. Francis de Sales Seminary Choir: St. Charles Text from the Homily This month is known as the month of the sacred heart because we celebrate a feast in honor of the sacred heart of Jesus during the month of June. And we celebrated it just a few days ago. And our bishops did a very special thing. They consecrated our nation the United States to the sacred heart of Jesus. That's something that had never been done before. The patroness of the United States is the immaculate conception. But our bishops wanted in this 250th year of our country to make sure that we understood that Jesus is the one that we ask to reign over us. When we honor the sacred heart, we ask his heart to reign over ours. That our hearts may be more like his. And in our gospel, we see how the heart of Jesus was moved. What moved the heart of Jesus? He saw the people abandoned looking like sheep without a shepherd. Lost. Suffering. And his heart was moved with great compassion for them. Think for a moment, what moves your heart? What brings a lump to your throat? And a tear to your eye? And think if that moves you when you encounter human suffering or sorrow, how much more the heart of Jesus because his heart is human like ours and experiences all human emotion and compassion. But his heart is also divine. And so, you could say he is moved with a kind of divine intensity even more so than our own hearts are moved by suffering. In our second reading we see how Jesus' heart was moved to even die for sinful humanity. There's a song with a lyric you would rather die than to ever live without me. And that's true for every human being. Jesus the second person of the blessed trinity, the son of God, showed us how much he loves us that he would rather die than to ever live without us. And so, it's no mystery that his heart would be moved with compassion but he wants us to share that same compassionate love. And so, in our gospel he called twelve apostles to continue the word that he had some to do. To heal the sick, to take away the burdens from sinners. Now he calls us to receive his love but then not to hold that love to ourselves but to share it so that our hearts may be moved to pity just as his heart was. And he gives himself to us in the word. We hear the word and try to enter more deeply into what moved Jesus' heart so that we will take on his values and his way of seeing things and in holy communion we also receive him body, blood, soul and divinity including his sacred heart to transform our hearts.
