BJ McKnight On The Indie Fam Series at Broadsides
So proud to have my nephew BJ Join me on the show to talk about the importance of artistry. Reminding his fellow artists that our mission is to allow our true self to be the foundation of our creative process. Brian McKnight Jr. is an American R&B/Soul singer, songwriter, and producer, known as the eldest son of House/Dance Icon, Singer/Songwriter Julie McKnight and R&B legend Brian McKnight, growing up immersed in music, developing his own smooth sound, and continuing the family's musical legacy. He's a multi-instrumentalist, part of the production team C.A.T.S., and also known as "OHBRIAN" for his experimental work, blending vintage R&B with modern elements. Key Aspects of His Career & Life: Musical Roots: Raised in a musical household, he learned from his father and mother (Julie McKnight), starting music around age six or seven and getting early access to studio equipment. Sound: Combines traditional R&B with contemporary vibes, featuring soulful vocals and live instrumentation, exploring themes of love, loss, and self-discovery. Production: Part of the production group C.A.T.S. (Care About The Sound) with his brother Niko, working across various genres. Solo Work: Releases music under his own name and as "OHBRIAN," a more experimental project reflecting grief and rebirth after his brother's passing. Collaborations: Performed with his father while also producing, co writing and performing on some of his albums. Awards: Won Best Original Score at the 2025 Newark Independent Film Festival for "Chest Candy". In essence, Brian McKnight Jr. is a talented artist in his own right, carrying forward a significant musical heritage while forging a unique path in the R&B world.
