This Sunderland Cemetery Has Been Hidden for 100 Years
Deep in the overgrown heart of Ayres Quay lies one of Sunderland’s most forgotten sites - the hidden Jewish cemetery. In this Beyond the Wear exploration, I set out to find out if Sunderland’s old Jewish cemetery still exists, and what remains today. Among the weeds and crumbling stones, I uncover abandoned gravestones, some still engraved with Hebrew names and dates long lost to history. What I find suggests the cemetery may have been used far longer than Sunderland’s official records show, a hidden chapter in the city’s Jewish heritage. Join me as I explore Sunderland’s lost Jewish cemetery, reveal what’s left behind, and uncover the hidden history still buried beyond the Wear.
