This retired general was known to have been close to President Prabowo Subianto since his time at the Indonesian Military Academy (Akabri). Retired General Ryamizard Ryacudu passed away on Sunday afternoon (May 31, 2026). He breathed his last at 2:03 p.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB) at the Gatot Soebroto Army Hospital (RSPAD) in Central Jakarta after undergoing intensive care due to an illness. Ryamizard's body was laid to rest at the funeral home located in the Puri Wira Bhakti Housing Complex, Cikeas, Bogor, West Java. The passing of the former Army Chief of Staff has left deep sorrow for his family, comrades, and the Indonesian people. During his military career, he was known as a decisive, nationalistic field general with a strong dedication to the country. After retiring, Ryamizard remained active in serving the nation through various national activities. In 2014, the 7th President Joko Widodo appointed him Minister of Defense in his Working Cabinet, where he served until 2019. During his time at the Ministry of Defense, he was known as the initiator and driving force behind the National Defense program, which was implemented extensively in various regions. When handing over power to Prabowo Subianto in 2019, Ryamizard reiterated his commitment to continue serving Indonesia. The deceased even reminisced about his long friendship with Prabowo, which began when they studied together at the Indonesian Military Academy (Akabri).
