Begonia maculata naturally has a somewhat upright, cane-like growth pattern, but as it matures, the stems can become heavy and may start to droop or lean. Staking provides support, keeping the plant upright and preventing stems from breaking, especially when it produces flowers. You can let your Begonia maculata continue to cascade as well which looks so lovely if the plant is on a shelf or in a hanging basket. Begonia are such an easy plant to water propagate because the roots come from nodes and there are heaps on this plant. You can propagate the Begonia by sticking the cutting straight into the soil, but I prefer the water propagation method because you can see exactly what is happening. They also push up very pretty root systems so it's nice to see in the glass vessels. Begonia Maculata water propagation: ✂️Cut: Snip off a healthy stem section with at least two nodes (the joint where a leaf meets the stem). 🌿Prepare: Remove lower leaves, leaving only a few at the top. 🫙Place: Put the cut end in a glass of water or a propagation vase. Make sure the node is fully submerged! 👀Wait: Roots will start to develop within 1-2 weeks. You'll see tiny white roots appearing! 🪴Plant: Once roots are about 1-2 inches long, transfer to a pot with well-draining soil.
