The film itself was broadcast on July 14, 1983. This promo was aired on June 30, 1983. The Survivor was not released theatrically in Japan. It was one of the first major Australian productions made during a period when the country’s film industry was becoming increasingly ambitious, encouraged in part by the worldwide success of Mad Max. At the time of the film’s Australian release, its director and principal cast members appeared in television news coverage and other promotional features. The scale of the media campaign would still be familiar today. Some of this contemporary television material, including interviews with director David Hemmings and actor Robert Powell, can be seen among the special features on the Blu-ray edition currently available in Japan. The story is not easy to describe. It begins with the mysterious crash of a passenger aircraft. Although almost everyone aboard is killed, the pilot survives without injury and with no memory of the accident. From there, the film develops into a strange and atmospheric supernatural mystery. Its dreamlike treatment of death, memory, guilt, and those left behind also seems to draw, at least in part, on the emotional experiences of families bereaved by air disasters.
