When planting a rhododendron, I dig a large hole, mix 60 liters of acidic peat moss with an equal amount of pine litter. I can also add vermicompost, as well as a slow-release fertilizer for rhododendrons. I place the resulting substrate in the hole. I adjust the transport container, which is the same size as the one I'm planting from, to the desired height so that the top of the pot is level with the soil edge. Then, I spread the substrate around the container in a thick layer, pressing it down firmly, completely filling the hole. I compact everything tightly over the entire surface of the hole, adding more peat if necessary, and remove the container from the hole. I remove the rhododendron from the transport container. If there is a dense felt root ball, I damage it by making vertical cuts. I place the rhododendron in the planting hole, water it, re-tamp down the surrounding litter, and mulch with peat or litter. I planted the rhododendron both after flowering and pruning in July, and before flowering in early May. Planting it in the ground before flowering did not affect its subsequent blooming.
