Tiger Woods made a surprise appearance to introduce the announcement, and Trey Wingo was in the room. Over the following days, Trey spoke directly with players at the Travelers Championship about what excites them, what concerns them, and what they believe the final version of this new structure will actually look like. This is what they said. What Brian Rolapp Announced The headlines are familiar by now: Championship Tour. Challenger Tour. 120-man fields. Mandatory cuts. No sponsor exemptions. A regular season champion. Match play playoffs. A Last Chance Series. International events through the DP World Tour partnership. Players largely support the vision. The real questions involve the details — and who those details apply to. The Jimmy Johnson Rule Rolapp closed his press conference with a phrase Trey keeps coming back to: rigid on the vision, flexible on the details. Trey's interpretation is what he calls the Jimmy Johnson rule. Jimmy Johnson famously said he would treat everyone fairly, but not equally. The more value you provide, the more flexibility you receive. Rory McIlroy is missing the Tour's 15-event minimum this year and nobody is making an issue of it because punishing Rory helps nobody. If Tiger Woods wanted to play events he had not technically qualified for, does anyone really think the Tour would say no? Justin's response was simple: that's how the world works. The Scottie Scheffler Problem The biggest issue players kept raising involved Championship Tour players being unable to play Challenger events. Scottie Scheffler has been loyal to tournaments like the Byron Nelson and Colonial for years. If those events become Challenger Tour stops, the current rules would prevent him from playing them. Trey does not believe that will happen. If the world number one wants to play his home event, the rules will find a way to make it happen. Justin compared it to the specific pathways created for Brooks Koepka's PGA Tour return. Sometimes rules evolve to fit circumstances. Lucas Glover's Perspective Lucas Glover has spent months involved in the process through the Player Advisory Council. His takeaway is straightforward: players support the direction but have concerns about losing access to tournaments and communities that matter personally. Glover pointed to the Cognizant event near his Florida home as an example. If it becomes a Challenger event, he cannot play it under the current framework. He understands the business logic. He just does not love the personal side of it. Chris Gotterup and the John Deere Problem Chris Gotterup raised a similar concern. The John Deere Classic helped launch his career and gave him opportunities before he had status. Under the new system, if John Deere becomes a Challenger event, he could lose the ability to return. His answer was practical: you play where the Tour tells you to play. But relationships with tournaments and tournament directors make those decisions feel more complicated than the economics suggest. Justin's Historical Perspective Justin pointed out that golf has effectively operated with two tiers for decades. Twenty years ago, the biggest tournaments were simply the ones Tiger Woods chose to play. The stars have always determined where the premium events were. The new structure simply formalizes what has existed all along. It also creates flexibility. One year the Byron Nelson may be a top-tier event. The next year it could be Colonial. That rotation could ultimately benefit more tournaments and more communities. The Bottom Line The vision is compelling. The details will evolve. And when those details involve players like Tiger Woods, Scottie Scheffler, or Rory McIlroy, flexibility will almost certainly follow. Rigid on the vision. Flexible on the details. That was the consistent message Trey heard from players on the ground at the Travelers Championship — and it may end up being the defining principle of the entire new PGA Tour structure.
