Sting wrote the song after his separation from his then wife Frances Tomelty. Sting himself insists the song is about the obsession of a lost lover, and the jealousy and surveillance that follows. While many misinterpret the song to be a love song, it is quite the opposite. After listening to the lyrics carefully, many people have realized that the song is actually told from a stalker’s point of view, watching and obsessing over the woman he loves - watching her every move, every breath, every step, and every word. He then asks her why she couldn’t see that she belongs to him.
