Dog anal gland infection or abscess. How a vet diagnosis and treats with Dr. Dan
*This video is for entertainment and educational purposes only. If your pet is sick, take them to see your local veterinarian for the care they need* (Disclaimer) Good Morning Everyone! I hope you all had a great week. Today I am talking about anal gland infections or abscess in the dog. As a veterinarian I see a lot of dogs with anal gland problems. The worse kind of problem is when the anal gland gets infected or gets an abscess. When a dog gets an anal gland abscess or infection it can be really painful. Some dogs will scoot or lick their butt. If the infection is really bad, the infection may even rupture through the skin. The anal gland lives at 4 and 8 o'clock on your dog's butt. The anal glands are right under the skin. The gland is like a balloon. When the anal gland fills up with secretions it will empty onto the dog's poop or feces. This will give the poop a smell that helps to identify your dog in nature. If the dog's anal gland gets blocked up or if it gets infected, this can lead to an anal gland abscess or infection. Anal gland infections can develop very quickly. It is very important to always go see a veterinarian for an anal gland infection or abscess, because these need medical care. A veterinarian will flush the duct and anal gland. By flushing the duct and anal gland, that helps to remove infection from the body and it confirms that the anal gland is no longer blocked. A veterinarian will put a dog with an anal gland infection on antibiotics and give something for pain and inflammation. Sometimes the doggy will also need an E-collar to prevent him or her from licking the anal gland infection. Once healed regular anal gland checks and expression are recommended to make sure the dog's anal glands are healthy and that they stay that way. Thanks for watching, Dr. Dan
