As luck would have it, we arrive in Dinkelsbühl right on time for the annual Kinderzeche festival. According to the magazine "Focus," Dinkelsbühl has Germany's most beautiful old town. It has never been destroyed by war or city fires. During the Thirty Years' War, Dinkelsbühl was occupied by the Swedes, but the city authorities managed to negotiate and prevent the occupying troops from ravaging the city. This gave rise to the legend that children persuaded the Swedish soldiers to do so. Also around this time, the city regularly treated students at the Catholic Latin schools to a meal at the end of the school year, hence the expression "Kinderzeche" (children were invited to a meal).
