(Source 1) The Eavorloop project is designed to supply heat and electricity for 7 cents per kilowatt-hour, cheaper than solar and wind power, yet capable of providing 100% baseload power. (Source 2) This is a novel geothermal power plant that, for the first time, operates without thermal water, i.e., hot water, deep underground. This allows the power plant to be built anywhere in Germany, regardless of location – and reduce energy costs everywhere. (Sources 2, 3, 4, 5) The project involves drilling a complex network of loops, up to 360 kilometers long, into the rock at a depth of 5 kilometers. And this is done with zero margin for error – down to the centimeter. (Source 6) The plan is to pump a liquid heat transfer fluid through the loop network, absorbing heat from the depths and bringing it to the surface. Theoretically possible, but high-ranking industry representatives and experts described the project as a massive waste of money – a bottomless pit – even during construction. The probability of the Eavorloop project succeeding was estimated at close to zero. (Source 6) However, contrary to all expectations, the project not only proved successful – every construction deadline was met without delay.
