A cultural critic obsessed with perfume teamed up with the industry's most notorious dissident perfumer and built a house that argues back. This is the story of Barbara Herman, Antoine Lie, and Eris Parfums, one of the most daring independent houses in modern perfume. Herman built her reputation on the blog Yesterday's Perfume (2008) and the book Scent and Subversion: Decoding a Century of Provocative Perfume (2013), reading fragrance as a coded record of gender, sex and power. In 2016 she launched Eris Parfums with Antoine Lie, the perfumer behind Etat Libre d'Orange's infamous Sécrétions Magnifiques and a vocal critic of the data-driven, market-tested fragrance industry.
