Tracing the Schuylkill Navigation System part 5 of 5. Port Clinton PA.

Hello everyone. This is the fifth of five videos documenting a small section of the 108 mile long, two hundred year old Schuylkill Navigation System. Officially opened in May of 1825, this was the first anthracite hauling waterway in Pennsylvania. Running from Port Carbon to Philadelphia, this canal provided the city of Philadelphia with the anthracite needed for industry and heating. We have covered a couple miles of the system from the area of Tom Lord’s dam 14 down to our current location in Port Clinton. Here there would have been a large coal dock for coal coming out of the Tamaqua region coming down the Little Schuylkill railroad. The canal would be abandoned north of this area in 1877.
