Robert-Houdin | The Art of Becoming a Legend | Who Was the Father of Modern Magic?

Jean-Eugène Robert-Houdin is universally called the Father of Modern Magic. Harry Houdini named himself after him — and then spent years trying to destroy his legacy. Every serious magician who came after him traced their art back to his work. And yet his career lasted less than a decade. So how did he become a legend? This video explores the life, career and written legacy of Robert-Houdin — and argues that what made him immortal was not his performances, but how he told his own story. We look at his life as a mechanician and magician in Paris, the Soirées Fantastiques, the Algeria mission, and most importantly — his memoirs. A carefully constructed 19th century narrative that inspired generations and redefined what magic could be as an art form. To understand why it worked, we have to talk about Goethe, about the concept of Romantic genius, and about how artists become legends in the eyes of history.
