I don't really believe they can be 100% protected, but there are some very interesting methods and products. For example, I really liked the liquid wax from Berger-Seidle, a product called FillAndFinish. Incidentally, I was also very pleased with the name; it has a very catchy sound. The product is essentially a solvent-based wax in liquid form. We pour it onto the laminate joints and, using a spatula, rub it in. The product is absorbed into the joints and the solvent evaporates, leaving the joints waxed and moisture-proof. I didn't believe it until I saw it myself, but now I think it really can work.
