On this, Kaliyug sitting in the king's crown showed its effect and the king thought of giving death penalty to the sage. But due to good sanskars, he stopped himself from doing so. But due to the bad effect of Kaliyug, his mind got corrupted and he put a dead snake around the neck of Shamik Rishi. This was the first effect of Kaliyug on any human being on earth and it made the most cultured king its victim. When Shamik Rishi's son Shringi returned after taking bath, he saw that his father was sitting in meditation and a dead snake was lying around his neck. Seeing this, he became very angry and on enquiring, he came to know about a king doing this act. On this, he cursed that within the next seven days, the king will die due to the bite of Takshak snake. When Shamik Rishi's meditation was over and he came to know about this, then he sent information to the king. So that he remains fully alert. On this, the king prepared himself completely for death and handed over the kingdom to his son Janmejaya after crowning him as the king. Then on the seventh day, the king died due to Takshak's bite. When Janmejaya came to know the reason for his father's death, he performed Sarpasatra Yagya to kill all the snakes. On this, all the snakes came and started falling in the havan kund. Scared Takshak wrapped himself around Indra's throne and then on the advice of Aastik Rishi, Janmejaya stopped his yagya. The legend states that Parikshit, the lone descendant of the House of Pandu, son of Abhimanyu and grand son of Arjuna of the Mahabharata fame, had died of snakebite. He had been cursed by a sage to die so, the curse having been consummated by the serpent-chieftain Takshaka. Janamejaya bore a deep grudge against the serpents for this act, and thus decided to wipe them out altogether. He attempted this by performing a great Sarpa Satra – a sacrifice that would destroy all living serpents. At that time, a learned sage named Astika, a boy in age, came and intervened to stop the yagna; Astika's mother manasa was a Naga and father was Jaratkaru a saintly Brahmin. Janamejaya had to listen to the words of the learned Astika and set Takshaka free. He also stopped the massacre of the snakes (Nagas) and ended all the enmity with them. From then onward the snakes (Nagas) and Kurus lived in peace. ...................................... ......................................
