Nieves Concostrina recounts how Manuel de Falla left for Argentina in 1939, fleeing an oppressive and violent Francoist Spain that stifled culture and freedoms. Although he refused to return during his lifetime and detested pomp and circumstance, after his death in 1946 his body was repatriated by the dictatorship and buried with great fanfare in the Cádiz Cathedral, next to the Francoist José María Pemán.
