British Dance Bands Of 1930

After offering selections of British dance music covering the years 1925 to 1929, it seems fitting to share a selection from 1930. One of the most popular musical films of the year was Paul Whiteman's "The King of Jazz". Two songs from the film, "Happy feet" (which the Forbes-Rust book credits as Jack Hart is actually Fred Elizalde's band, featuring Norman Payne) and Billy Cotton's impressive "Song of the dawn" are included. "On the sunny side of the street" was introduced that year and instead of the Hylton version, here's Sir Robert Peel's seldom heard rendition. This is one of two Sterno recordings, the other being the opening number, "Sing you sinners". A hot performance from Jan Ralfini to begin and I wish all his recordings were as up tempo as this example. By contrast, the particularly lilting "The moment I saw you" by Ray Starita is a lovely and uncommon example of his output. A few have been featured on my You tube channel with some new additions to give an insight into popular British dance music of 1930.
