These two paths, both born in the fertile intellectual and spiritual landscape of ancient India, share many similarities but also exhibit profound differences. One of the most fascinating aspects of their relationship is what Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha, said about Jainism and its teachings. This article delves into the historical, philosophical, and spiritual contexts to explore the Buddha’s perspective on Jainism. Buddhism and Jainism emerged around the 6th to 5th centuries BCE in northern India. Both traditions developed during a time of intellectual ferment, known as the “Second Urbanization,” marked by the questioning of Vedic orthodoxy and the rise of new philosophies. Jainism traces its origins to the teachings of Mahavira, lived on 599–527 BCE, according to traditional accounts, a contemporary of the Buddha.
