On October 14, 1974, the village of Nossa Senhora dos Aflitos, at the foot of the Serra Dourada mountain range in Goiás, was found empty. Four hundred and eighty residents disappeared without leaving a single body, a single drop of blood, a single sign of struggle. Beans were boiling on the stove. The radio was playing. The beds were half-unmade, as if people had gotten up mid-way. The village dogs stared motionless at the mountain range. A single survivor, Belmiro Castro, described a line of barefoot residents walking, smiling, into an abandoned mine. The investigation lasted 83 days and reached no conclusion. The case was closed, the village was demolished in 1988, and the documents remain classified to this day. But in 2025, geologists recorded a continuous vibration coming from the subsoil of the old village, every 142 seconds, like a breath.
