Rembrandt Soft Pastels! Is it painting or drawing??

Is it Painting or Drawing?? Using Rembrandt Soft Pastels into a wet surface! This early Sunday morning I am working at my little art desk in the house instead of my big studio out in the garden. I can see the main studio from the art desk that my dear wife kindly allows me to clutter up her office with in the sun room. I am surrounded by plants and little water features looking out to our gardens, pond and Lake Superior in the distance. It is a beautiful day in March in Duluth, Minnesota even though our pond is still frozen. (I did check and the koi have survived, so far, the winter!) The reason I am in the house today for the video and why we didn't do a live show again this weekend is because my dear Kristen has had to work a lot of weekends at the glass shop in town. She still hasn't found a gallery manager so she has, as the Director of Operations, been having to cover some shifts. So, I am now at the house waiting for our seven year old to wake up. Let me tell you what I will be doing in this short video today! I will be working with my Rembrandt Soft Pastels in what I consider to be a painterly manner. Let me know if you agree or disagree, be kind though, please. After all paint is simply a pigment, binder, solvent and additives. Let me break down my logic here about why I think using the soft pastels in this manner is painting; Pigments- The colorants in the soft pastels. Soft Pastels have some of the highest concentration of pigments of most art media! Binder- Talc, the fine clay plus water when they make them. Solvent- The water I will be using to spread the soft pastels. Additives- In this case it will be ultimately the SpectraFix Final Fix spray applied in several light layers. (You can use their Degas Fixative if you want to keep working, layering a painting too.) Thank you for watching today, feel free to check out my work on the various social media and our website: www.davidaustingallery.com Be well my friends, you are not alone! Spread kindness and #createwithoutfear #rembrandtsoftpastels #painting #drawing #abstractart Thank you Royal Talens North America and Rembrandt! Sincerely, David K.
