Los Angeles is known as the mecca of cinema because it's where the eight studios that launched the history of film were founded. The Latin influence is undeniable; over 48% of the population speaks Spanish, and it's the city with the largest Mexican population outside of Mexico. Originally, this place was founded in 1781 as the Pueblo de la Reina de los Ángeles on the Porciúncula River, so a visit to Olvera Street, where the city's Mexican heritage is celebrated, is a must. Just a 15-minute walk from here is Chinatown, a peaceful and Instagrammable neighborhood that evokes the spirit of the United States. Of course, your trip wouldn't be complete without a visit to Hollywood Boulevard, better known as the Walk of Fame. This area spans several blocks and features over 2,700 stars embedded in the pavement, recognizing important figures in film, television, music, radio, and theater. There you'll find the Chinese Theatre, where the handprints, footprints, and signatures of famous celebrities are displayed in cement blocks on the floor. Nearby is the Dolby Theatre, where the Academy Awards are held each year. If you want to take a tour inside, you must book at least two weeks in advance on their official website. For incredible photos of the famous Hollywood Sign, I recommend heading straight to The Last House on Mulholland, a spot that offers the best view of the sign. Angels Flight is the shortest on-track vehicle system in the world and has appeared in famous movies like The Muppets and La La Land. Speaking of the latter, I had breakfast at Sarita's Pupusería, located inside Grand Central Market, where one of the film's scenes was shot. Aboard a golf cart, I visited Paramount Pictures, where hundreds of movies have been filmed. I was able to sit on one of the benches where Forrest Gump was filmed, see the building where Elvis Presley spent long periods of time, and tour a film studio. You can't miss taking a picture at the Urban Lights installation of 202 lanterns outside LACMA. As for museums, I visited the Academy Museum, where you can learn about the history of cinema. There's a room dedicated to Casablanca, another to The Godfather, and you can see several Oscars as well as costumes used in important films. Rodeo Drive is the ideal place for shopping and fashion lovers. Another popular spot is the Griffith Observatory, where admission is free. There, you can look through various telescopes, learn about astronomy, and see the Hollywood sign from a different perspective. Speaking of free places, downtown Los Angeles is home to two contemporary art museums: MOCA and The Broad. Santa Monica is one of the most famous beaches in the area, and it's also home to its famous pier, where you'll find Pacific Park, whose main attraction is the world's only solar-powered Ferris wheel. While you're there, you can enjoy a beautiful sunset at Venice Beach and explore the artificial canals of Venice, designed to resemble the Italian city. For food, I enjoyed the typical In-N-Out burgers, Pink's hot dogs, and a Mexican restaurant called Mariasol, located on the Santa Monica Pier.
