When General Cinemas Ruled America’s Malls

There was a time when General Cinemas theaters were everywhere, and going to the movies felt a little more unpredictable, and a lot more fun. In this video, I look back at the glory days of General Cinemas, from bizarre and brilliant promotions such as the Straw Vote, Taco Bell Express locations inside theaters, and summer camp movie series, to the policy trailers that somehow became pop culture icons all on their own. Along the way, I break down how General Cinemas left its mark on moviegoing, mall culture, and even TV and film, with references popping up in Seinfeld, Sgt. Bilko, and D2: The Mighty Ducks. If you remember lining up under that familiar General Cinemas logo, this one’s for you.
