We share helpful tips to help pregnant women take care of the health and well-being of themselves and their babies. Are you wondering if it's safe to dye your hair during pregnancy? While some beauty treatments are considered safe for pregnant women, others require special care. The formal recommendation is that pregnant women not dye or bleach their hair during the first three months of pregnancy. Any products containing formaldehyde, ammonia, or lead are also not recommended, as this is a crucial period when the baby is still developing, and external interference can cause serious birth defects. After the first three months, it's possible to get highlights or use toners, as long as they don't touch the scalp. Some experts, however, allow coloring from the second trimester of pregnancy. Even so, it's important to follow certain guidelines, such as using products free of ammonia, parabens, propylene glycol, formaldehyde, and heavy metals. The same approval period—after the first trimester—applies to those who want highlights or streaks. "And, again, it's only permitted if you use products that don't contain the aforementioned active ingredients, such as ammonia." Many chemicals used in hair dyes, especially permanent hair dyes, are very strong—after all, they need to provide a long-lasting effect. And many of them end up being absorbed through the scalp and then reaching the bloodstream. The problem is that, once these active ingredients enter the bloodstream, they can cross the placenta and reach the fetus. Depending on the substance, there's a chance they could cause changes in the baby's development. What if a woman dyes her hair without knowing she's pregnant? Although the recommendation is to avoid dyeing hair early in pregnancy, if this happens, there's no reason to worry. This is because there are no scientific reports of maternal or fetal consequences related to this practice.
