It wasn’t the neighbor from number seven—the knock was different, more irregular, from someone who didn’t know how hard they had to knock to be heard. She had opened the door an inch. Outside was a man in a suit completely soaked in rain and a little girl next to him, equally wet, crying silently, tears mixing with the rain on her face. Their car had pulled off the road five kilometers up. They had walked to the first lights. Maria stepped out of the doorway and said, “Come in.” She didn’t know them. She didn’t know anything about them. She knew that the little girl was shivering. She had welcomed them with towels and a nightgown for the little girl and hot tea at the kitchen table. And that night she had learned that the man's name was Andrei, that the girl's name was Sofia, that Sofia's mother had died a year and four months earlier, and that he cried less often after that and didn't get over it as easily as she did. This is the story of what happens when you open the door completely. You don't know what comes in with the people you let in. Sometimes the rain and the tiredness and a shivering little girl come in. And something warm remains. Maria's mother used to say that the door either opens or it doesn't. That if you open it, you open it completely. Maria had believed that all her life. And on that October night in Câmpulung Moldovenesc, she understood why.
